Our forest sources
Sustainably Sourced Timber. Consistent Quality.
Wespine sources its Pinus radiata sawlogs from plantations across Western Australia, stretching from Mandurah and Boddington in the north to Albany in the south. Most of our supply comes from within 150 km of our Dardanup sawmill, with the majority provided by the WA Forest Products Commission. Additional quantities are sourced from nearby privately-owned plantations, ensuring a reliable and locally-focused timber supply.
Sustainable Plantation Management
Radiata pine plantations are managed on a 30-year rotation to maximize growth and sustainability. Seedlings are planted at a density of approximately 1,400 per hectare on a 2.4m x 3.0m grid. Around 10 years after planting, when the trees reach about 15 meters in height and compete for sunlight and nutrients, the first thinning takes place. Roughly half of the stems are harvested in this process, allowing the remaining trees more space to grow.
At around 20 years, the trees have typically grown to about 23 meters in height. To sustain their growth rate, a second thinning is conducted, reducing the number of trees to around 350 per hectare to allow the strongest stems to mature fully. After 30 years, the remaining trees—now approximately 28 meters tall with a base diameter averaging 400mm—are harvested as part of the final harvest.
Each stage of the plantation cycle serves a specific purpose. Wood from the first thinning is used for particleboard, pulp, and treated fence posts, while the second thinning produces small sawlogs and wood for particleboard or pulp. The final harvest provides high-quality logs for structural and other sawn timber products, with tree tops primarily used for particleboard and pulp.
